What do I wear to the interview?

One of the most common questions that come up during our interview preparation seminar is, “what do you wear to an interview?” Find out what we think.

There are a few items to keep in mind when thinking about how to dress for the job interview. We listed a few, so have a look and write these down.

Industry and culture

If you are applying for sales job at a funeral company, wear a dark suit, white shirt and shiny shoes. If you are applying to an blue collar job, you may want to wear just a tie and button shirt with kahkis. We suggest that you take a look at the company website and see what kind of image they project and copy it.

Inside scoop

Ask around. You may know someone who has or is working with the company you just applied to and are receiving an interview. They can give you low-down.

Not sure, do this

You can ask the interviewer or play it safe and wear a suit (for white collar jobs) and for blue collar jobs (a tie and shirt as menteioned above should do the trick).

Do you have a story about wearing something you shouldn’t have or overdressed and the interviewer was in jogging pants? Let us know, we want to laugh along with you.
