Small vs. Large Companies

This article is provided by our marketing coordinator Cynthia, and explores the value of working for smaller-sized companies.

With respect to newly graduated students, most are heard to say they wish to apply to large corporations. These companies have a lot to offer, but one may want to consider working for a small business as there are several advantages listed below.

Impact

An employee that is productive and contributes can make a huge impact on the firm and recognition is readily available. There is a closer relationship between value added and value received.

Family atmosphere

Being able to work closely with others, can yield high interactive situations and thus improve motivation. When one knows their co-workers well, a good team relationship can develop.

Flexibility

This is important as there are generally less strict guidelines. One has the flexibility to deal with personal issues, work outside the conventional office or work hours and much less waiting time to get something accomplished. In large companies, a simple procedure can take a lot of time to get approvals.

Challenges

The learning curve can be steeper as one needs to learn by either doing the job, researching or trying to find out a certain way to do something that has not be accomplished in the past. There are generally more duties to complete as the office is smaller and everyone needs to pick up some extra duties that may fall outside their core discipline.

Concluding Thoughts

Small company leaders strive for success and want to create the best workplace for their employees. They are always open for change and will value your opinion. Your choice of organization should be based on the quality of work experience you will gain, not the size of the organization. Many experts believe this is where the future lies, so next time you are looking for a job, consider that small local marketing company.
