Resume writing tip: Should you include your full mailing address on your resume?

Our documents do not include the full mailing address, and here are a couple of reasons why.
Reason 1
The first reason is related to privacy. We feel that people do not need to know exactly where you live, because, why should they? They can make some assumptions regarding your place of residence, your socio-economic profile, religious affiliations, or make up some weird and fantastical stories about you, who knows!
Reason 2
We used to include a mailing address when companies sent correspondence using postal mail, up and until the early 2000s. Including a mailing address dates your resume (ie. makes it old-looking), and I think using just the city makes it streamlined, less cluttered and easy to read.
Bonus tip for the cover letter
We also do not include the address of the company on the cover letter. This method was used a long time ago when people used to mail, and then fax their documents to the prospective employer. This is a sure way to date the document, so we recommend leaving off the company address.
So, there you have two reasons why we do not include the full address on the resume and a bonus tip for the cover letter. We hope you enjoyed this post, and please share this information!
Good luck with your job search, and if you have any questions or would like us to check over your documents, we would be happy to hear from you.
