How do you answer the “tell me about yourself” interview question.

The “tell me about yourself” question is always a tough one to answer. Find out why most people get this one wrong.

This is probably the first question that most interviewers ask, and most people spend too much time answering this one.

The purpose of this question

This question’s purpose is to act as an icebreaker, and secondary purpose is that it helps the person interviewing you, formulate an opinion of how you put together a response.

Pitfalls

The reason why this question is one of the hardest to answer, is due to the interviewee’s inability to keep the answer short. We recommend spending about 20 seconds on this answer and the topics can include a) school b) work c) leisure or similar. We would recommend not talking about things like religion, affiliations, and other controversial topics. We also recommend mixing up the answers, so in other words, during one interview talk about something related to your leisure activities, and during another talk about another topic and see which response works the best.

Summary

It’s not important what you talk about, as it is how you talk about it. Formulate your response in a simple step procedure, organize your points and keep it brief.
