Employed and ‘resume-less’? That may not be a good idea, find out why

Feeling comfortable and confident? Enjoy the daily routine and have no worries in the world? Well you may be surprised to hear that things can change, and in a short period of time!
So you know that resumes are used for applying to jobs, right? But what if we tell you there are other, and equally practical reasons to have an up-to-date resume. We listed a few scenarios below:
Succession-Planning
For those unfamiliar with this term, it means filling a position with another position. We managed succession-planning programs while working in HR, and you might be surprised to learn that you will need supporting documents when ‘climbing the corporate ladder’. This is also applicable for other jobs promotions, such as moving from a lead hand position to supervisor role, or any job that requires movement to fill a role that becomes vacant. Positions come up with little notice, so having an updated resume will ensure you are able to apply for those enrichment roles.
Terminations, layoffs, and company restructuring
In most cases, your employer will not tell you in advance that your role is terminated. Most of our clients that have been terminated are surprised to hear they are no longer employed. From our experience, it generally takes a minimum of three weeks to secure a position, and usually a month (starting from the time one applies, completion of interview(s), reference checks and negotiations). Having an updated resume will speed up the process and get you back to work, and earning an income.
Mergers and acquisitions
We thought this section needed a separate mention, so from our experience working through acquisitions, we know that there will be duplicate jobs. Your doppelganger will be in the same situation (who’s job will they terminate? Will it be you or them?), so being prepared is a great idea. This also applies when other companies buy companies, and the new company makes the employees re-apply for their jobs. Even if you have been a stellar performer over the last 10 years, you are treated like a new employee. So get in line and jump through those hoops.
How much are you worth?
So you have been working at your job for 10 years, and you always thought, “I am earning what others are making in the same job, but in a different company?” Having an updated resume will allow you to ‘test the water’ and see how you are doing versus your peers. How do you do this? Well, you can send some applications to employers, or reach out to a recruiter, who should be able to tell you what you are worth. The recruiter option is great, as you can check on worth, without going through the interview process.
Well, those are some common examples of why our clients are glad they had an updated resume. Can you think of any other reason? We would like to hear from you and leave a comment below. If you liked the article, be sure to share us on social media, and email. Help someone today!
