Are you overqualified? How to apply to a job with less accountability.

There are many reasons why people apply to jobs with less accountability. The common problem people experience is how to convince the person receiving your resume, that you are a suitable candidate.
When people apply to jobs, the person receiving your application, resume and or cover letter, reviews what you have to offer compared to what they are looking for. In the case where you have more experience then the what the job offers, your application will probably be overlooked or held for future consideration. The reason why recruiting people tend to overlook these applications is due to the lack of fit between what the job offers and what the candidate can provide.
Reasons why your application is turned down
There are a few reasons why, but the main reason is that the company does not want to hire someone who may appear desperate for a position. Typically overqualified people have been terminated/laid off etc., and need something fast to cover their expenses. These candidates will generally work until they find something more suitable and the short tenure causes the company to lose money and productivity (to fill the gap created by the departure).
How to break down the barriers and get a job when you are overqualified (or perceived to be)
- Create a cover letter that explains your situation. You may have worked in the industry for a long time and want to work in a position with less accountability. You could be a recently landed immigrant and need Canadian experience, or you could be in a career change and explain your desire to pursue a different position.
- Alter your resume to highlight different skills and tone down the experience.
- Focus on the lesser tasks and use updated headings that talk to your most recent expereince. This way you are not lying on the resume if you leave out some experience that is overwhelming to the recruiter.
Changing to a role with lesser accountabilities can be tough, but it’s possible to achieve a desired position, with a little strategy and ingenuity.
Have you changed occupations recently and if so, what did you do to help you with your job search strategy?
