Resume Help in 5 1/2 Minutes

Because August is national vacation month, and you do not have much time to spare as you are in “get-all-work-completed-so-you-can-go-on-vacation-without-stressing-about-what-kind-of-mess-you-will-encounter-when-you-get-back mode; we decided to help out and put together a quick read.

Here are a few resume help pointers from a professional resume writer, (in no particular order) which will enhance your resume, and your chances of securing an interview.

Resume Length
Although there is no set page length requirement, we feel that having a resume that is one-to-two pages would suffice. Longer resumes tend to be overwhelming, and probably unnecessary in most cases.

Clutter
It’s important to remove clutter from the resume, in the form of old or irrelevant training, certifications, or education (ie. if you completed post-secondary education, then we would omit the high school education).

It’s also important to keep the resume free of paragraphs. We see a lot of top-heavy resumes, and wrote about this topic here. Keep the paragraphs to the cover letter, and remember that it’s tough to read through loads of text.

Contact Number
We would recommend one contact number with voicemail. We had someone, who later turned into a client, email us and was concerned that she was not getting any responses to her applications. We tried her contact number and … No voicemail! She was concerned that it would cost a set value per month, but when job searching, it’s worth the investment.

Tailoring Content to a Specific Job Posting
One of the most common problems with resumes is related to not targeting the job posting requirements. It’s important to review the job posting you are applying to, and cater the language, and content. I know it’s a pain in the butt, but those who spend a bit more time ensuring key points are present on the resume, tend to get a better response rate.
