Didn’t Prepare for the Salary Negotiation? You May Have Missed Out On Money

Too shy to ask about salary? You may be missing out on some extra money. Find out how you may be able to increase your pay cheque.
During the interviewing process, the interviewer or other company representative and you, may not have dived deep into the salary details for the job.
They may have asked you at one point what you were earning at your most recent job, but was that enough for what you were doing? Do you want that value to impact what you will get? Sometimes the only way to get more money is to leave your job and start fresh with a new company and new pay scale, so here’s your opportunity.
When you finally receive the proposed salary, you may feel like the amount is not enough, so what do you do?
Well, this is the best time to negotiate, as when there is an offer presented, multiple parties have accepted you, and hours spent on the process. They do not want to have to go through the process again.
So how much are you worth?
- Get a general idea of what your type of job pays
You already know what you’ve been earning throughout your career. But is that consistent with what others are getting paid? Use the Monster.ca SalaryWizard to compare. Also try the free Career Benchmarking tool through Monster.ca. Canada’s federal government has a useful resource as well at its Labour Market Information site.
- Ask around.
If you are working with recruiters or placement agencies as part of your job search, they should be able to give you a very good idea of what specific employers pay for employees like you. You can also query your network on Facebook, LinkedIn and other social sites.
- Don’t forget the value of benefits
Job seekers tend to focus on salary when they negotiate a job offer. “If only they’d give me another 15% in pay I’d be truly happy.” So if the employer won’t budge on salary, think about what your benefits are worth. An extra week of paid vacation, a good pension and insurance plan, and some flextime hours might be worth that 15% or more.
