No degree, diploma or certification? no problem right?…

If you have been working in the same job for 10 years, 15, 20 etc., and do not have any post-secondary education, this could be a problem. Find out why.

A good portion of our clientele are working with companies with tenure stretching over a decade or more, and many of these people do not have post-secondary education. So what’s the problem?

a) Management jobs – most management jobs that are posted externally, and internally, require some sort of degree, or diploma. By not having this requirement, you may find that you may not get the chance for a promotion.

b) Competition – most jobs require some sort of education beyond high school, even if it’s not a management or supervisor role. You may see some job ads that require a degree and or x amount of years of experience. If your profile is next to someone who has similar experience, you may lose out that candidate with the higher education.

What to do?

Working and trying to balance non-work time is hard enough without going back to school and completing a degree or diploma. The good thing about higher learning institutions is that you can complete a degree or diploma (or certification) one course at a time. It’s relatively painless and looks good on the resume.

How to write that you are completing a degree or diploma on the resume

a) You can write – “Business Program, (name of school) and leave off the date.

b) You can also do the same as in a), but write “in progress”, or “expected date of graduation”.

Conclusion

In any case, whether you are thinking about a degree, diploma or other, adding some higher learning is extremely important to your profile and we would recommend pursuing some kind of additional training. For the folks who have just one credit left to their degree or diploma, please finish! It can be perceived in a negative way if you are almost there and stop the process.
