Cover letter advice

So, does anyone really read a cover letter? Is is worth the trouble to research, draft, re-check and ensure all items are clearly stated? Find out why it’s important or not to create a cover letter for each job.

You probably have thought about not writing a cover letter for a great job that you are eager to apply to. Let’s discuss the nature of the cover letter and importance.

Why write a cover letter?
A cover letter’s (along with your resume) purpose  is to improve your profile, and tell why you feel you are the best candidate for the position, and extend your invitation for a face-to-face interview (or over video conferencing). It completes the package and generally the expectation, unless otherwise stated, is that one should be written for each job you apply to.

Do people actually read the letter?
We cannot say for certain if everyone reads the cover letter, but from experience it’s difficult to review 200 letters for a position, but when we were deciding on who to contact for an interview (phone or face-to-face), the letter was a necessary part of the equation.

A few tips on cover letters
When writing a letter, one should go to the website of the company that you are interested in applying to and gather a few points to integrate into the letter. You can also search LinkedIn and other media for some details on the company. The cover letter should recap your experience and highlight specific details of the job posting, or job description. Keep it short and to the point, and change it for every job that you apply to. This formula works best!
