The Benefits of Volunteering

Are you currently thinking about changing your occupation to one that requires a specific skill set that you do not have? Volunteering could be a good way to assist in your career change. Find out more.
We recently read an article posted on LinkedIn the other day regarding some tips when unemployed, and the author suggested volunteering. We also wrote an article some time ago regarding volunteering and how it can boost your skill sets and propel you into another career (or if you do not have one, such as being a newly arrived Canadian this would also be applicable).

Volunteering is not just for the unemployed, but also for those looking to gain other skill sets.

When to use volunteering

1. Gain experience and develop a different set of skills
2. Keep your skills sharp
3. Network
4. Maintain your daily or weekly routine

Gain experience and develop a different set of skills

Thought about an exciting position, but cannot seem to secure an interview? Probably the position needs a certain skill set. Volunteering is a great way to boost your skills, so you can increase your success of obtaining that occupation. In other words, if you are interested in becoming an Event Coordinator and have never coordinated an event, a volunteer position that raises funds through events would be a perfect chance to gain some exposure to that role.

Keep your skills sharp

If you are unemployed or are unable to use a skill or skills that you worked hard to learn, volunteering would help you keep your skill or skills current. So, if you earned a certificate in Excel, and your job does not require you to fully utilize the tool, finding a volunteer position will maximize the application and keep your skills up-to-date.

Network

You are probably tired of hearing about networking, but if used properly, it can yield excellent results. The traditional networking most think of is suiting up and going out to a meeting of people and forcing yourself to talk about ‘who knows what’ and to ‘who knows who’, but networking doesn’t need to be an awkward event. It can be as easy as volunteering with an organization and working with people. You never know when an opportunity will come up, but you have to get out there to find it.

Maintain your daily or weekly routine

If you are unemployed, employers know that you are probably not walking up and getting ready for the day at the same time you once did. Your routine is important as it prepares you for the day and to be productive. If you are not working, volunteer your time, so you can tell your future employer that you are not sitting idle, but you are active, motivated and willing to do what it takes to get back to the working world.

Volunteering can be a great way to keep your skills sharp, keep up with a good routine, network and utilize your skills. If you need some help or have any questions about volunteering, please contact us.
