Government jobs, how do I get one?

Some of our clients try and try and try to get their hands on a government job. I suppose they like the enhanced benefits, vacation time and other perks. But how do you get one?

Our experience with government jobs is that you have to have government experience to crack the egg. In other words, having some kind of lead in or a scrap of experience is going to help you in the long run.

Of course knowing French, and fitting into the right demographics will also improve your chances.

Here are some tips

  1. Find a job placement agency that deals directly with government contracts and employment. Like HR Associates for example.
  2. Look up some sample jobs and find out what the government agency is looking for. In some cases (more than some), the job descriptions are often generalized and hard to figure out (in terms of needs and wants)
  3. Learn French!
  4. Fit their demographics. The government appreciates all kinds of candidates and seeks to include a fair representation from the local population.

The best advice we can give is to get your foot in the door with a temporary position (if all else is not working for you). Finding a temp contract will allow you to gain experience, contacts, references and will build your portfolio for the next role.
