Functional resumes don’t work

If you are thinking about switching occupations, there are other methods and strategies aside from using this type of resume. It doesn’t work well.

What is a functional resume?

Functional resumes are resumes that discuss your skills as opposed to showing your individual contribution per job title, per company, per year. So in other words, one would list just their skills that would hopefully fit into what the perspective employer would find valuable.

Unfortunately, this type of resume is a hard sell (they are often abstract). People reviewing a number of resumes will gravitate towards someone with similar-type of experience that they are seeking. Functional resumes are hard to understand as they do not appear to possess the traits exactly like what the job description is asking for.

We prefer a blended approach, but always gravitate towards substantiating any experience with value.

Have you had any success with a functional resume?
