Resume Writing Case Study: Waterloo, Ontario Client

This week’s case study is from a client residing in Waterloo, Ontario. We will discuss the nature of the project and the outcome.

Profile: Statistics and Actuarial Science graduate from the University of Waterloo, Ontario.
Need: New Canadian immigrant student is having problems getting responses from employers.
Solution: After reviewing the resume, we built a project that encompassed a re-write, both resume and cover letter.

Client B graduated from UW and needed to find work fast. She was originally from China and she had no work experience. Her English was good and she had good school marks and had completed Actuarial exams.

We recommended that we rewrite her resume as she was using a template from the UW career services. Although helpful in some aspect, their resumes are outdated and if all people are using the same template, employers will become saturated with boring (and ineffective) resumes. We also recommended that she use her easier English name, as her birth name was hard to pronounce. Although we feel employers should not discriminate, they do or they feel some reservation about calling someone whom they cannot pronounce their name.

After applying to less than five jobs, she was successful in receiving two call backs (that we were privy to). This is a great response rate and we wish her luck.

If you have some questions or are not seeing results, please give us a call and we can discuss your project for free.
