Rejected because of social media?

A company called Reppler (the company is new and the information should be viewed as entertainment purposes as I am a skeptic when it comes to studies, but none the less an interesting read) proposed that over half of their respondents who reviewed possible candidates, rejected them based on social media information, such as that found on Facebook.

Is this study valid? We believe it may have validity. Because we have utilized Facebook and LinkedIn to pre-screen candidates, others are also doing the same.

Recommendations?

If you have a social media account like Facebook, we advise that you ensure that pictures that depict one is a potentially negative view (like partying on the beach with a 10L bottle of beer), should be non-searchable to the general public. Having a good reputation online is just as important as having a good reputation in other aspects of your life.

Should you be cautious?

Yes, and make sure to scrub out all potentially incriminating pictures, words and other details in the online realm.

Unfortunately you may not realize if this has happened to you, but if you have heard of a candidate not making it to the interview stage due to social media, we would like to hear about it.
